This full day workshop will provide a practical learning experience for educators wishing to develop a plan to incorporate flipped teaching and learning techniques into their classes and courses. Those who have started working with flipped classroom techniques who wish to learn more and develop their plans will also benefit from this workshop.

This professional development workshop will incorporate flipped instruction techniques – you will be expected to watch a brief a video beforehand, summarize it, and generate a question based on it (i.e. use the WSQ technique). Additionally, practical hands-on exercises (bring your iPads!) will provide active learning experiences and help to reinforce techniques and content being covered. Participants will work with each other and the workshop instructor to explore new ideas and clear up misconceptions.

A free copy of the eBook Flipped Classroom Workshop-in-a-Book by EmergingEdTech author Kelly Walsh will be provided to all students as a resource for further learning and exploration.

Telling the Story: Lessons Learned from the Outside World

Research states that facts and figures only activate the part of the brain where we make sense of words. But, when listening to a digital story, a recent article reports "not only are the language processing parts in our brain activated, but any other area in our brain that we would use when experiencing the events of the story are, too". To get their point across, the business world is shifting from bullet points to stories. How can we do this in schools? Presenting content using storytelling can be captivating, compelling, and can help students grasp the content. This presentation will include the research to support this pedagogical shift, various examples of content presented this way, and an overview of the process and tools that can be used to create these rich digital stories.

Demonstrations on using Educreations, Educanon, and Touchcast will be shown to aid in developing the flipped classroom model. Educreations is app that allows for pictures and whiteboard interaction. Elementary Students Take iPads Home: Mobile-Assisted Instructional Design Strategies for Tutoring

With a need to decrease disparity and support at-risk students that were not meeting grade level benchmarks for math, a team of elementary teachers and university faculty created a mobile-assisted instructional design strategy for home tutoring with iPads for elementary students. The new model used evidence-based research from indirect instructional design strategies of computer-assisted instruction and two additional instructional strategies to supply independent direct instruction: drill and practice and experiential learning through gaming. Current data analysis from 'iPads Go Home' indicates a connection between improved learning outcomes and iPad application use, while decreasing issues of disparity for at-risk students.
