Telling the Story: Lessons Learned from the Outside World
Research states that facts and figures only activate the part of the brain where we make sense of words. But, when listening to a digital story, a recent article reports "not only are the language processing parts in our brain activated, but any other area in our brain that we would use when experiencing the events of the story are, too". To get their point across, the business world is shifting from bullet points to stories. How can we do this in schools? Presenting content using storytelling can be captivating, compelling, and can help students grasp the content. This presentation will include the research to support this pedagogical shift, various examples of content presented this way, and an overview of the process and tools that can be used to create these rich digital stories.

For decades worksheets have been the cornerstone of practice activities across the curriculum, but they are a legacy of a bygone age for 21st century learners. In order to remain relevant, today's teachers are asked to reimagine everything they have been doing for years. Classroom content these days is expected to be colorful, dynamic, and interactive. But how does a teacher go from a file cabinet filled with worksheets to multimedia content? This session is designed to help teachers begin to create their own materials – using the tools they already have.  THIS SESSION IS REPEATED SATURDAY @ 1:30pm.

Elementary Students Take iPads Home: Mobile-Assisted Instructional Design Strategies for Tutoring
With a need to decrease disparity and support at-risk students that were not meeting grade level benchmarks for math, a team of elementary teachers and university faculty created a mobile-assisted instructional design strategy for home tutoring with iPads for elementary students. The new model used evidence-based research from indirect instructional design strategies of computer-assisted instruction and two additional instructional strategies to supply independent direct instruction: drill and practice and experiential learning through gaming. Current data analysis from 'iPads Go Home' indicates a connection between improved learning outcomes and iPad application use, while decreasing issues of disparity for at-risk students.

Removing the Shackles to the “Sage on Stage” Approach to Teaching
With the nascent, almost ubiquitous use of mobile devices and tablets in the K12 learning environment, it is vital teachers harness the necessary skills to modify current teaching practices. An observable gap in pedagogy is the creation and implementation of formative assessments. A critical edtech tool educators use to support, engage and formatively assess their students is TodaysMeet (https://todaysmeet.com). The TodaysMeet website, in conjunction with the Ipad, gives educators the freedom and opportunity to monitor, measure and redirect instruction when and where necessary in a seamless approach.

Examples of quality student work will be shared. There will also be a brief demonstration of how teacher-created raps can be used as teaching tools. If implemented in a structured, focused manner, student rap battles can be a fun, manageable, creative way to engender enthusiastic student participation and expression of content-mastery.

Colorful, Dynamic and Interactive: Reimagining Classroom Content
For decades worksheets have been the cornerstone of practice activities across the curriculum, but they are a legacy of a bygone age for 21st century learners. In order to remain relevant, today's teachers are asked to reimagine everything they have been doing for years. Classroom content these days is expected to be colorful, dynamic, and interactive. But how does a teacher go from a file cabinet filled with worksheets to multimedia content? This session is designed to help teachers begin to create their own materials – using the tools they already have.

Pin It! Transforming Social Media Networks into Professional Learning Tools
In this presentation we will share how iPads have been used to increase cross-curricular collaboration and form a relevant and user-friendly professional learning network within a school. Instead of forcing teachers to adopt education specific software, the goal is to transform personal social media applications, websites the majority of teachers already use daily, into powerful professional learning tools. By channeling the familiar, teachers can take advantage of the same applications for sharing photos and vacation adventures and transform them into tools for increasing collaboration, sharing instructional strategies, and aligning curriculum.

Teaching Visual Rhetoric with the ComicLife App
The word “comics” conjures images of Spiderman in the minds of most. But comics are not just texts that entertain. The complex interaction of words, images, sound, and space in comics makes them a rich site for the study of visual rhetoric in the classroom. The iPad app ComicLife allows students to practice principles of visual rhetoric to create their own comics, regardless of artistic ability. Using technology to create multimedia texts like comics cultivates the kinds of 21st Century literacy skills that scholars and organizations like the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) have stressed that students need.
